best films: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)

Sure, it's popcorn fare, but you've got to love the complete ridiculousness that is the success this movie saw.  Considering it had everything going against it -- it's a pirate movie based on an amusement park ride, for god's sake! -- it redefined what it was that audiences were looking for in a new franchise.  And in a bevy of superhero drivel continuously getting spewed out into cinemas, Pirates was a welcome change.  Even though its two sequels paled in comparison and were nothing more than look-at-me special effects extravaganzas, this original earned its cred by being both entertaining and delivering one of the best performances of the decade in Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.  It can also be credited for introducing the world to Keira Knightley, something you can either be glad for or otherwise, though her turns in Pride and Prejudice and Atonement tell me it may not have been a terrible find.

Standout Performance:  Clearly Depp steals the show in his Oscar-nominated turn as Sparrow, but I'm one of the rare people who almost equally enjoyed Geoffrey Rush's surprising role as Barbossa.
