september oscar talk

Well it's that time of year, folks. As the September doldrums ensue with their crappy throwaway horror romps and movies that the studios have no faith in, it's about time to focus on that glimmer of hope known as October, November, and December (before, of course, the inevitable equally crappy January swarms in). As the year comes to its big finish, my mind is ticking away at what the big nominees will be at the upcoming Academy Awards. Here are my current predictions (in order of my confidence in them) - make your revisions down there in the comments!

You have that much faith in Naomi Watts? She's tricky when it comes to awardage. I don't think "Fair Game" will make a huge splash with the Academy despite the pedigree. On the other hand, granted "Rabbit Hole" gets a lot of critical support (that "Birth," "Dogville," "Margot at the Wedding," all lacked), that should lock Nicole Kidman in for a nomination. She's obviously terrific in it... when is she ever less than outstanding and revelatory? And, because of the lackluster summer, Jennifer Lawrence seems to be hanging on in that Melissa Leo spot. With the proper campaigning keeping the film in everybody's mind, she could definitely land a nomination. No love for "Never Let Me Go" in these predictions, though. I think Keira Knightley could probably break through. If the film is like "One Hour Photo," (critics loved it, a bit polarizing to mainstream audiences) as a high-profile supporting actress she should be able to get a nom. (Carey Mulligan/Andrew Garfield, I presume, are the leads, and would therefore be taken down with the film if it got the tepid mainstream audience reaction it could very well get given its director/subject.) And "The King's Speech" defines Oscar bait, and I don't see it turning into "Invictus," so you're very smart to put your faith behind it.

You've got a lot of faith in The Town, I notice. Have you seen it? And if so, is it good? I'm a huge fan of Gone Baby Gone, and I've been looking forward to Affleck's follow-up ever since. I'm really hoping this one is just as good as the former.

Simon- I feel like Secretariat is being set up to be this year's The Blind Side. I completely agree with you.

I have to side with Jude that Watts most likely won't get any accolades with Fair Game which looks to me as insignificant as The International.

Aww no Carey or Keira?
I think that's the movie I'm dying to see the most this year.

Andrew: Yes, I'm definitely excited to see a non-Burton HBC. Having just seen Wings of the Dove, I crave some more of that!

Jude: Yes, I don't know that I'm all that excited about Fair Game, but it seems like a Michael Clayton sort of flick... and you know how that one did.

Simon: Yeah, I'll probably agree with you on that, but doesn't it just seem crazy enough to be possible??

Jason: I've heard really positive reviews coming out of the festival circuit. I thought the trailer wasn't very promising, but people are hailing Affleck's direction big time... seems like a ringing endorsement.

Jose: It honestly just missed on most counts for me. I'm very excited too, but I feel as though Oscar will find it too out of the box.

Good Predictions, and it looks like the Best Actor category this year is pretty weak this year, but at the same time unpredictable. Also, for best supporting actor, I would think about Christian Bale in The Fighter, apparently it's a demanding performance from him.
